Family Systems

The family systems approach is what separates the training of marriage and family therapists from other types of mental health practitioners. A family is a system of interconnected individuals. I can’t understand you if I only see you in a vacuum. Who we are as individuals has been shaped and molded by our family system and is still being shaped and molded by our past and present family systems. As a part of a system, changing an individual inherently changes the larger system, and changing the larger system changes the individual.
