Connect with other men on a morning hike
The signs are littering our culture: people are becoming more isolated and detached from one another. So many technologies and services have promised to bring us closer together but somehow have contributed to deeper divides and divisions. Societies of the past have held rich traditions of ways that men joined with other men in community, whether that be a rite of passage or late night game of poker. What are ours?
The good news is that we can take small, simple steps to move toward community and connection. All it takes is being intentional and a little planning. Men’s Walkabout is one step you can take.
What is it?
Men’s Walkabout is an easy hike from 7-8:30am on Saturday morning that gives you an opportunity to connect with other men in the community. I will provide some some brief structure to help us connect and lead us through a brief grounding exercise at the turn-around point, but each hike is what you make of it.
Who is invited?
Men. That small piece of identity is what we share. It doesn’t matter what your age is, what your sexual orientation is, what your ethnic/cultural/spiritual/etc. identity is, or even how you understand what it means to be a man. Manhood and masculinity look different in different people. I only ask that you make space for those who are different from you, because in our uniqueness and diversity lies strength.
1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.
The hike is 7-8:30am on the Gabrielino Trail. The trail is relatively flat (except for a short hill at the beginning) and follows a stream. We will meet at the west end of W Altadena Drive on the street in front of 898 W Altadena Drive, Altadena, CA 91001. Please try to arrive by 7am. I will have a brief set of suggestions that I will share and then we will begin the hike promptly at 7:15am. We will walk at whatever pace the group takes on and spend half our time walking out, pause a moment for a brief grounding exercise, and then return with the aim of arriving back where we started by 8:30am.
It is helpful for me if you RSVP with the form below, but whoever joins us between 7-7:15am is welcome. If you have any other questions for me you can contact me through through my website here.
This is a free community event.
I hope to see you there!
